“Lock also reported on another organization with some similar membership, the OptiMystics, a citizen’s action organization designed to promote and improve business in Monte Vista through positive actions. The group has borrowed their name from the San Luis Valley Tourism Council’s “Mystic San Luis Valley” theme. The OptiMystics recently launched their own website, http://optimystics.org/ , and are currently looking at how they can get funding for improving dusk to dawn lighting on downtown businesses, currently focusing on the 100 block of Adams Street. The group hopes to keep all of the labor and supplies sourced from local businesses as well.”

“[Adam Lock] and [Ken] Hamko discussed several possibilities with the other board members, who brought up ways to promote downtown businesses and local events, including an effort by Rio Grande Savings and Loan CEO Shon Davis and the Optimystics to improve sidewalks downtown. [Jason] Medina also encouraged them to consider an online commerce portion of the website or a spot to buy gift cards from local businesses.

“At the last Monte Vista City Council meeting members of the OptiMystics Citizens Action Group came before the Council with a presentation of their plans and to request funding. One of the group’s co-founders Adam Lock gave a presentation about the group. “The OptiMystics are a grassroot citizen action group. We formed to facilitate positive change here in Monte Vista. We are all very progress forward thinking people. We’re solution oriented. “Board Member Adam Lock reported on the progress of the Virtual Holiday Fair being filmed and posted online in lieu of the annual Craft Fair held at the Valley Church of the Nazarene the first weekend in December….Lock also reported the Optimystics are making progress on their downtown lighting project and the Marketing Committee will make a formal presentation to City Council requesting the lodging tax  funds for a Monte Vista marketing site by hopefully by the December 2020 meeting and if not in early January.”

Citizen action group the OptiMystics is putting together a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Monte Vista on March 17. The parade will start at 5:30 p.m. For the parade route participants marching or driving in the parade will line up at the Stars and Strikes bowling alley and go from 2nd Street up north on Adams, then they will turn west onto 1st Avenue, and then go down Washington as they return to the Stars and Strikes bowling alley.” <Click here to read the entire article>

Monte Vista Journal – 3/24/2021

“Local veterans came together to lead the St. Patrick’s Day Parade with a color guard. The Optimystics, a citizen action group, hosted the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Monte Vista on March 17.  The socially distanced event was a celebration of the holiday and community. Prizes were given out parade participants with Tara Miller winning first place. Second place was awarded to the Monte Vista Golf Course, and the Polished Edge took home third place. Local businesses also got into the spirit of the holiday with some offering special dishes and drinks for the occasion. Rain Brews tavern made 45 pounds of corned beef and cabbage and it was later reported by the Optimystics that they sold out in 90 minutes.”

“Early in the morning on April 20, 42 new light bulbs were installed on the 100 block of Adams Street. The project was part of the OptiMystics Citizen Action Network (CAN) revitalization and beautification efforts for Monte Vista. SLV REC installed the lights for free, sending two machines and staff to install the new bulbs. It took them about an hour to complete. After it was complete, the City of Monte Vista Public Works Department took the opportunity to clean and sweep the street while it was closed for the light installation.” <Click here to read the entire article>

The idea for the sponsored bike racks began with Jennifer Nearing and Laura Conchelos. Nearing is an avid bike rider and Conchelos also had the idea for the bike racks. Conchelos and Nearing presented the idea for the bike racks to the OptiMystics Citizens Actions Network with their belief that it would be a great way to encourage more activity in Monte Vista.
